How do banks create IBAN codes?
IBAN Code Structure
The IBAN is up to 34 characters long and includes your country code, check digits, bank and branch code, and account number. This standardised structure makes the IBAN easily identifiable and allows for streamlined communication between banks.
IBAN Generation Process
To generate an IBAN, banks convert the local account number to an international format, adding a country code and check digits calculated using an algorithm. This ensures accurate routing of funds for cross-border transactions.
When do you need an IBAN?
You need an IBAN when making or receiving international payments to ensure accurate routing of funds between banks across different countries.
Check IBAN
What happens if you enter the wrong number?
Each IBAN includes two check digits following the country code, which banks use to verify validity of the number. Our checker tool perform the same check to confirm if your IBAN is in the correct format.
Non-existent IBAN code
If you send money to a non-existent IBAN code, the transaction will fail, and the funds will be returned to your account. The bank will notify you of the error and may provide details about the issue. To prevent this, always verify the IBAN before initiating a transfer.
Wrong IBAN code
If you send money to the wrong IBAN code, the funds may be transferred to an unintended account. You’ll need to contact your bank immediately to report the error and attempt to recover the funds.
Check IBAN
Always confirm the details with your recipient.
When sending or receiving money, always check the IBAN code with your recipient or bank.
If you suspect you’ve used the wrong IBAN code for a transaction, contact your bank immediately. They may be able to cancel the transaction. If cancellation isn’t possible, you may need to reach out to the recipient directly to request a refund.
